💫 Sculpting Stargazer Man - Part 1, the Armature and Paper Mache Clay
🌟 In this first video, you can see how I added crumpled foil and a few foil balls - and a little bit of cardboard, to create the armature for my silly Stargazer Man portrait.
I used my Mannequin Head pattern to make the base. You can find that pattern here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/mannequin-head-pattern
🦁You can find over 30 other patterns for masks and sculptures here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
Of course, you don't need to use the mannequin pattern - you could make a form yourself with crumpled foil and masking tape. You can also use the foil and other items to make a different creature, or a portrait of another character.
I hurried through this part of the process because I was trying out the new Paper Mache Clay recipe that can be used with any brand of joint compound. It worked great. You can find that recipe here: ua-cam.com/video/3oF_tKaRiBY/v-deo.html
If you take your time and apply your paper mache clay more carefully than I did, you can make it even smoother with a thin layer of pre-mixed drywall joint compound. You can watch how I do that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/5KWB-q0j8r4/v-deo.html
I put a couple of screenshots on my blog, in case you want a closer look at this fellow for some strange reason. 😊 You can find it here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/sculpting-stargazer-man-part-1
If I forgot a link that I said I'd include, please let me know.
In the next video, I'll clean up that rough paper mache clay with some new tools I just bought, and give him a bronze-look finish. Be sure and watch for it. If you just happen to write a short story to explain how Stargazer Man ended up on Earth, please post a link to it so we can read it. I'd love to know more about this crazy-looking guy. 😊

Painting The Minotaur Mask - a Fast Way to Paint Fur over Brown Paper
Переглядів 1,5 тис.21 годину тому
🐮 I just finished my new Minotaur Headdress Mask pattern for the Percy Jackson 'Lightning Thief' play. In this video, you can see how I painted my Minotaur's black fur quickly, using black acrylic paint mixed with a lot of Golden Glazing Liquid. The brown paint underneath shows through, and it looks really nice. But it took over 24 hours to dry, so it won't work if you need to use the mask on s...
Best Paper Mache Clay Recipe - Use Any Brand of Joint Compound!

No more searching for the right joint compound for paper mache clay! This new recipe doesn’t use PVA glue, so you can use any brand of pre-mixed drywall joint compound. 😊 I love this new paper mache clay. I didn't realize that I needed a mannequin head until I took a closer look at the "family photo" of the lion masks on my website. Wood Glue? Or Paste? Which One is Best for Lion King Jr. Masks?
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
I often recommend using Titebond III Wood Glue for theater masks, because it dries fast and it creates a very strong mask. But it is expensive, so I did a side-by-side comparison, using the glue for the baby Simba mask, and the cooked flour and water paste for the lioness mask. In this video, you can see the difference between the two methods, and choose the one that will work best for your pro...

    Hi Johnnie. After watching three of your videos on Garden 😮 Clay…or whatever name got the most votes, I started wondering why the (in)famous UA-cam algorithms haven’t introduced us years ago. I’m a little miffed about that. Anyway, I am now one of your newest subscribers. Was hunting a way to make a two foot or so high statue for my garden in a medium that wouldn’t require firing. Low temp clay won’t work because I couldn’t put it into the oven. I don’t know of any weather proof air dry clay until I stumbled onto your video about the frog. Now my brain is humming and I am trying to work out ways and means and wondering how much experimentation I will need to do before diving into my intended project. Thanks for the hand up.

      Yes, there's always shrinkage when water-based products dry. But it doesn't seem to shrink a whole lot. You won't want to use it over a really hard object, like a glass bottle, though, or it will crack as it dries.

    Thank you so much for all your hard work to make life easier for many of us. I tried this new method and loved it. It was so easy to make and produced such wonderful results. My question to you is, do I need to prime before I paint? Thank you again for making life easier for us.💗

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache День тому

      I don't think you have to prime it, if you don't want to. A coat of gesso makes it a little easier to get nice bright colors, but it's really up to you. I do highly suggest using a varnish or clear spray after painting, to protect the finish and to keep your sculpture from absorbing moisture from the air.

    I just got this pattern for my birthday, and I've been experimenting with different build materials to get used to the cutting and bending of the shapes. I started with basic paper just to see how the design comes together. I'm trying thin poster board while I go through cereal to try with the cereal box material. • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache 6 днів тому

      You don't want to sand it without a mask, because silica is in the mix. It's always present when the limestone is mined, but it isn't really 'toxic.' It's just a really fine powder that you don't want in your lungs. I almost never sand my paper mache clay because there are better ways to make it smooth, but if you really feel like you need to do that, wear a mask.

    • @UltimatePaperMache

      The paper strips are great for masks, because they're so light. I use the paper mache clay for details on masks, or to make sculptures. It's much stronger than paper strips and paste, and can take a lot of handling. And you can sculpt features and fur more easily than with the strips and paste.

      I bought a really cheap mixer at Walmart, about 10 years ago. I keep it in the kitchen, but I only use it for my craft projects. I bought another one just like it, but a different color, for food. The paper mache clay likes to ride up the beaters and can get stuck up inside the housing, where it's really hard to get out.

    Hi joni,thank you for your great recipes,but unfortunately we do not have dry wall compound...but want to make perfect dough like you...could you please make another recipe like this but without dry wall compound?

      You can use plaster of Paris, instead of the drywall joint compound. I have a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/FLTVGPx4jWk/v-deo.html

    I have a tip. They make ultra lightweight joint compound which can make life much easier. 😊

    Thank for the video! Just in time since im starting a new project when the weather gets nicer (in 2 weeks!) Would any varnish work to seal it? Thanks again

      If you keep the sculpture inside, which I recommend, you can use your favorite varnish. This recipe is not weatherproof, so you won't want to use it outside.
